Electronic documents have gained wide acceptance due to the ease of editing, sharing of information and processing. However, paper documents are still widely used in many environments. Moving into a paperless and distributed office environment has become a major goal for document image research. In this thesis, a new approach for form document representation and processing is presented. This approach enables automatic or semi-automatic electronic document sharing and processing over the World Wide Web (WWW) using eXtensible Markup Language (XML) technologies. Each form document is scanned and the information concerning the set of tables in that document is stored in a database either automatically, using image processing techniques, or semiautomatically, with minimal user interaction. A set of algorithms is introduced to generate the document representation and web sharing routines. One algorithm is used to generate an XML file corresponding to the form document. In addition, a common Document Type Definition (DTD) and a common eXtensible Style sheet Language (XSL) are introduced for form documents and are used for all documents. Using the XML, XSL, and the DTD representations, a corresponding Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) form is generated for each imaged document. In addition, corresponding database tables and user interfaces are created to allow for the storage, retrieval and manipulation of form documents. The algorithms introduced are integrated into a framework that allows form documents to be displayed, updated, shared and processed over the web.
